This post provides detailed information about the Google EDLA certification for OPS computers, including the certification process, maintenance, updates, and frequently asked questions. It explains that the certification is valid for two years, during which security patches are applied quarterly. After two years, customers can still receive technical support and pay for individual testing, but Google will not require mandatory re-testing. The post also addresses concerns about custom branding, software updates, and compatibility with Android upgrades, clarifying the limits of changes to the firmware and user interface as it relates to the EDLA certification.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most frequent questions and answers
Is the OPS computer Google official EDLA certificated?
Yes. DS’S M8195 OPS computer is officially certified by Google under the EDLA program.
How long does the EDLA Certification last?
The EDLA certification is valid for two years. Google requires security patches to be applied quarterly during this period.
What service include for the 2 years EDLA certificate?
The 2-year time limit is based on Google’s regulations. Google stipulates that after completing the certification, the official security patch must be applied once a quarter within 2 years. After each security patch update, it must be sent to the laboratory for testing again. So here we will cooperate with the 2-year security patch update and the technical services in between. After more than 2 years, we will continue to provide technical support, such as bug fixes.
What happens after the 2-year EDLA certification expires?
After the two years, Google no longer requires mandatory re-testing, but you can choose to continue receiving updates. To maintain certification, you’ll need to pay for individual testing, which costs approximately $1,650 per test. You can decide whether to submit for testing quarterly or less frequently.
However, After 2 years, Google will no longer require mandatory testing. As for whether you want to submit for testing once a quarter or once a month, it depends on your decision.
Can we request a 3-year or 5-year warranty with extended maintenance and updates after the certification period?
After the 2-year certification period, you’ll need to pay a separate fee for re-testing if you wish to keep your OPS computer updated with Google’s latest security patches. While Google doesn’t mandate further testing after two years, you can submit for testing at your discretion, typically at $1,650 per test (cost may fluctuate, please contact us for the latest quotation).
Does Google provide a paper certificate for the EDLA certification?
No, Google does not provide a physical paper certificate for EDLA certification. The certification is managed digitally and is tied to the OPS computer’s firmware.
Can we place our own logo on the product?
Yes, you are free to apply your own logo to the product. There are no restrictions on branding in terms of logos.
Can we customize the boot-up logo or desktop UI?
No, changes to the boot-up logo or desktop UI are not permitted under the EDLA certification. Altering the UI or boot logo would modify the firmware, which would invalidate the EDLA certification. To make such changes, you would need to go through re-certification.
Q:Can we have other Apps built in?
A:The EDLA OPS computer is google officially certificated, it has Play store pre-installed, users can freely download Apps from Playstore. However, if hoping to have apps integrated into the firmwared, this will involve new firmware and have to re-test by google, welcome to talk to our sales engineer for more details.
Q: Can we install other apps on the OPS computer?
A: Yes, the OPS computer comes with the Google Play Store pre-installed, allowing users to download and install apps freely. If you want specific apps to be integrated into the firmware, it will require a new firmware version and re-testing by Google. Please contact our sales team for more details on custom app integration.
Q: Is the OPS computer running Android 13? Can it be upgraded to Android 14 in the future?
A:This involves Android version upgrade and the customer’s APk upgrade.
1) Android version upgrade: The usual practice is that after the EDLA project, the Android version will not be upgraded. Each Android version has a different underlying system architecture. System development and EDLA development are huge workloads. DS TECH’S OPS computer is currently Android 13. For example, whether it can be upgraded to Android 15 in the future depends on the joint decision of the chip manufacturer MediaTek and our motherboard solution company. If MTK(MediaTek) has no plan to develop Android 15, it is unlikely that we will make an upgrade plan.
2) The upgrade of the customer APK can be uniformly upgraded when the security patch is updated every quarter within 2 years. It will not be able to be updated after more than 2 years unless you spend extra money to send it to the laboratory for testing again, because Google controls the firmware version number.
